Raku is an ancient Japanese method of firing porcelain clay, utilizing rapid changes in temperature. The beads are placed in a very hot kiln and a large air-tight container of shredded newspaper. With just the right time, temperature, and technique, the beads come out with vivid colors and sheen. Fire and smoke create the matte black surface areas that are not glazed. Oxygen deprivation and temperature changes are what determine the exact shade of the color. Slight variations will cause the glazes to react differently and the change in colors.
