Carved Asian Ivory Dragon (Ryu) Dish. This unique round dish was carved from one piece of ivory and has an intricate carvings in relief. The coiled dragon is in the center of the dish with a a fine reticulated pierced border decorative rim. The dragon has two black eyes. The back has remnants of a label. This piece is a small dish or shallow bowl and includes the wood stand.
The Chinese say that to be born in the year of the Dragon is very good luck! The dragon is the imperial emblem of the Emperors in China, especially from the from the Han period where their coat of arms shows two dragons fighting for the fiery pearl. The dragon is a supernatural creature and is the symbol of power, strength, wisdom and goodness. It represents the utmost in accomplishment: good luck and a successful life.
